A book that became a movie

This is a novel based on the true story of a legendary figure from America's fur-trading era. I like historical fiction, and I came across it while browsing books on Millie's Library. Things get urgent right from the opening, and once you start, it's hard to stop. I actually couldn't stop, so I stayed up late... wrecked my sleep schedule... laughing through the pain here. I thought the title sounded familiar, and sure enough, it had been made into a movie. I haven't seen it, but I remember a friend's review. Apparently, whenever they looked up, someone was still running around the wilderness... haha. At the time, I thought that was hilarious. What kind of movie is that... I'll pass. But reading the book made me curious about what it would be like on screen. The vast stretches of nature, the towering mountains, the rivers essential to life and travel, the tribes carrying on their different cultures, the animals that owned the land, and what the main character, Hugh Glass, actually looked like... How would they bring all of that to the screen! Sadly, I can't see it in a theater anymore, but luckily it's on Netflix, so I'm planning to watch it soon.

North America during the fur trade

나는 돈도 벌고 싶고 세상 경험도 하고 싶기에 이들처럼 교역 시장에 뛰어들었을 법하지만, 신체적인 능력으로 인해서 일주일 안에 죽었을 듯한게 문제🙃At the height of the fur trade, the characters head into the unsettled American interior for their own reasons, knowing the dangers. Many risk their lives for money, but some go to see more of the world. When I read books set in the past, I often get jealous of the things people got to experience and enjoy that we no longer can. Here, it was the natural world and the different tribal cultures. I want to make money and see the world too, so I probably would have joined the fur trade myself. The problem is, given my physical abilities, I'd probably have been dead within a week 🙃

It's reality. It's comedy and tragedy.

Physically, Hugh Glass is my polar opposite. I recently gave up less than ten minutes into a 5K, and if I were left alone in some brutal environment, I wouldn't be thinking about how to survive. I'd be praying to die quickly and painlessly. He, on the other hand, fights a bear, comes to the brink of death, then crawls and crawls for days on end to stay alive. His already toughened body may have helped, but his earlier experience working on ships and the survival skills he'd learned from Indigenous tribes also helped him live and breathe again. But his greatest driving force is revenge. He survives to take revenge on the two companions who didn't just abandon him—they killed him. Burning with revenge, he makes choices no rational person would make. And yet that single-minded need for revenge is also what keeps him alive. The author dug through historical sources, adding imagination to the surviving records to complete the story. The real events are a series of coincidences so dramatic they're hard to believe, while the invented parts feel too real to be fiction. So it was comedy and tragedy.

Everyone has their own interests.

Fitzgerald is portrayed as an outright villain. Apparently, though, the only surviving record is that he left Hugh Glass behind while he was still alive. Everything else was written from the author's imagination. There's no way to know what the real Fitzgerald intended or thought, but I found myself wondering what the story would look like if it were told from his perspective, with his reasons. Everyone has their own interests in human affairs, after all. It may have been a selfish choice, or he may have thought it was a rational one.

Time passes, becomes history, and disappears

This is a little beside the main point of the story, but as I briefly mentioned earlier, I felt a real sense of loss over the cultures of the different tribes that have since disappeared. Even within a relatively small area, different tribes traded, clashed, and maintained their distinct cultures. Beneath skies covered in stars, there were all kinds of plants and animals that may now be extinct. White men armed with guns were just one small part of nature, but now they're all that's left.

운동을 해야한다는 교훈을 얻음(?)The lesson I learned: I need to exercise(?)

일단 운동을 열심히 해야지..!I pitched a tent by the sea and read, and just the fact that I wasn't inside a building made me feel closer to Glass. The book felt more alive. I remember once reading a blog by someone backpacking across America and swearing I'd do it too. That enthusiasm came rushing back. First things first, I need to get serious about exercising...!

Forgiveness and revenge

The book opens with this quotation. FROM THE BOOK “Do not take revenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God. For it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine; I will repay,’ says the Lord. —Romans 12:19” What if Glass had gotten his revenge completely? People often say forgiveness is the best revenge, but I'm not so sure in this case. If he'd taken revenge in a way that satisfied him, maybe both Glass and the people rooting for him would have felt that release. But the ending the author imagined feels even more real than what actually happened.
