Cheon Seon-ran

A short story collection... not my thing, but it was a quick read.

Recognizing someone at once after so many years apart seemed too beautiful to ever happen in our lives, but then again, our lives weren't exactly ordinary either, so something like that could happen at any time

A book I read through our book exchange

(그럼에도 불구하고 밤의 사색은 중도하차했다ㅠ)I read Mower through our book exchange. Unfortunately, I was the first reader again this time, so I started without anyone else's comments. Korean fiction with a contemporary setting + short story collections aren't my thing, so I wouldn't have picked this up without the exchange. But I guess that's the appeal of a book exchange... it force-feeds you so you can't be a picky reader..? (Even so, I did give up on Night Reflections. 😭)

A book whose values don't match mine

There are eight stories, set in dystopian futures. Some of the worlds looked interesting, but most felt far too bleak to me. Sigh. The problem is... I'm someone who has trouble connecting with pessimism just for the sake of it. 😭 Beyond that, the author's values and mine are very different, so I had a hard time relating overall.

That's not how AI works...

These days, with the work I do and the world being what it is, I spend more time talking(?) to AI than to people. With token limits, I'm obsessed with squeezing as much efficiency out of it as I can, so watching the physical AI in this book ignore its instructions and stupidly do whatever it wanted (if it doesn't follow instructions, it's stupid AI, okay 😭), wasting battery and tokens, broke my heart... Imagine how furious the developers/owners would be... and that even leads to environmental damage...

Prose full of Instagram sentiment

I like straightforward prose, so this wasn't a great fit for me, but it still went quickly, and with the stories being short, it made for an easy read. My memory is terrible... I should have written this review as soon as I finished, but between being busy lately + it not quite being my thing, I kept putting it off, and now I'm wrapping up with this flimsy review... I didn't hate it the way I hated Ppangchung... With books I enjoy, I have so much to say, and even while reading, I make an effort to hold on to those memories. But books I don't like don't really leave me with much, which is a bit of a shame.
