That evening, one thing remained to be said. Thank you, for everything.

When on earth will this damn war end?

Pierre Lemaitre

A few years ago, I happened to read Pierre Lemaitre’s The Wide World. Set during the French colonial era, it had the plain, unadorned prose I like, and I got so absorbed that I flew through it. Turns out it was a brick of a book. (I read the ebook, so I had no idea...!) I enjoyed it enough that it stayed with me, and since the author had won the Prix Goncourt, I asked a friend (who’s French) about him. My friend hadn’t heard of the author or the book, and I remember feeling a little disappointed somehow. I’m not sure what I was disappointed about, but I think I’d expected him to be someone everyone in his country knew, like Han Kang. So why, despite enjoying the book, have I still not read the other books in the series? 1. The next book hadn’t been published yet when I was reading it. 2. The earlier series was out, but enjoying the book was one thing—there was so much disgusting stuff in it that I felt queasy and didn’t want to put myself through that again for a while... Then, after a string of books I didn’t like before The Great Swindle (😭), I wanted to read something I actually wanted to read, and picked this up.

The Wide World

While The Wide World was set after the Second World War, The Great Swindle begins in the final days of the First. Both feature people profiting from the chaos of war. Given what I’ve been interested in lately, I kept noticing how people made money back then... Compared with The Wide World, this felt less like a story unfolding in a way that made sense and more like things happening because that was where the story needed to go. I’d recently read a book that threw plausibility out the window, so I was already fed up and a little sensitive about it. Thankfully, this one at least tries to make things make sense to the reader. What I mean is, it’s vague, but it doesn’t take that vagueness for granted and dismiss the reader. The book acknowledges it too, writing it as something only God knows, as the way fate or life works. But our lives really are like that, or sometimes even more so, so I can accept it.

관계Relationships

There are so many tangled relationships in this book. These are the two I focused on.

1. The relationship between “a man who loses his face saving someone else’s life (Édouard)” and “a man who survives thanks to him, then devotes the rest of his life to the person who saved him (Albert)”

If I were Édouard or Albert, could I have been that sincere with the other? Neither has done anything wrong to the other, so I understand it in my head, but could I keep down the resentment that would naturally well up inside me as well as they do? They don’t live for personal revenge. They live to keep each other alive, leaning on each other. Maybe that’s what allows them to move forward. Édouard saves Albert, does his part, and dies. He planned it that way from the beginning. The moment Pradelle acknowledges that there is someone he can truly trust and rely on, that person abandons him. This is where Pradelle loses. If those two had joined forces and devoted their lives to revenge, working to hurt Pradelle directly, it wouldn’t have been such a satisfying, elegant victory.

2. The relationship between “a son whose dad never understood him (Édouard)” and “a dad whose regrets come too late, after his son’s death (Marcel)”

Even though the first relationship is the main one driving the story, the second is the one I connected with more, the one that held me. Their relationship couldn’t end because it had never really had an “ending.” Relationships end one way or another. But is that ending really the end? Only after his son’s death does Marcel begin trying to bring his relationship with him to an end. The author gives them a chance to reach a real ending. In that final moment, when Marcel’s car hits Édouard and sends him flying, did Édouard say goodbye to his dad? No one but Édouard will ever know, but I believe that was the moment their relationship finally came to an end. Because that’s the happy ending for this relationship.
