The fact that most reviews are positive... This book makes me feel like the whole world is lying to me...

What is good, and what is evil?

Personally, I don't think you can divide things into good and evil. That's also why I dislike doing it. This book draws that line in the most simplistic way. But what it portrays as good was so deeply evil, and what it portrays as evil sometimes read as good. So I couldn't get behind it, and it went beyond that: it annoyed me. 1. These people work for a government agency that rescues missing people, yet they're all making a fuss about rescuing people they know first. They came across as incredibly selfish and incompetent. There's no proper system for prioritizing rescues, so anyone without connections or someone pulling strings for them might as well give up hope. All they can do is watch as the people already chosen get rescued. Even the government agency that's their only hope shuts them out. They probably believe the government is sending people to save them. The people abandoned because of this selfishness died twice. Ironically, this is what history repeating itself really looks like. 2. There's a god who grows stronger by soothing the anguish and resentment of people who suffered injustice on the Korean Peninsula. This god alone answers the suffering of people the other gods have turned away from. If we're dividing gods into good and evil, who's the evil one here?

Glorifying evil

The characters are horrifically selfish. They let their emotions lead, with no strategy or thought whatsoever, and they're incompetent on top of it. It's a whole collection of people without a shred of reason. Stupid people with convictions are always trouble. Every character is like this. One-dimensional and flat. They're emotional at every turn, and the book seems to think that makes them good. Sacrificing your life doesn't make your choice a good one. The premise is a government agency rescuing missing citizens on behalf of the country, but there's no system, no anything. Reading about the hiring and how the work gets done left me speechless. It's a place where you can do whatever you want if you just insist loudly enough. Even the people in senior positions give in. They're just as selfish and incompetent, so that's what they do. They send researchers whose own families are involved out into the field. Even though that conflict of interest makes them likely to botch the job. Or even though they know perfectly well they'll only rescue their own families. In fact, everyone cheers them on. As I said earlier: rescuing people they have a personal connection to. Does it even make sense to glorify this behavior in a story dealing with history? When this very selfishness has claimed so many victims throughout history, over and over again. When another agency chooses to save a greater number of innocent civilians, these people angrily condemn the decision. At this point, calling them incompetent is a compliment that lets them off easy. They're horrifically selfish and evil. Did they really not know, deep down? I think they knew. They're evil.

A weak premise and weak content

Unfortunately, I couldn't feel any experience of office life, or of the world in general, in this book. And even if a premise is meant to be fresh or entertaining, the basics still have to add up. Even an invented world has to be put together in a way readers can buy into. On that front, it couldn't help being disappointing. It's the same frustration I felt watching Nobita in Doraemon as a kid. As a reader, you can't help thinking the author had a plot mapped out but lacked the writing ability to carry it through, so kept taking the easy way out by fiddling with the premise. Some authors lean heavily on speech patterns to characterize people. They use the sort of dialogue you'd only hear in a TV drama. As though they have no other way to show us who these people are. I felt that way about Rules for Raising Bread Bugs, and I felt it again with this book. Was the idea to use horror stories and shock value to somehow cover up the shortcomings and crank up the melodrama? There are so many pointless scenes of eating human flesh or spilling blood. When I read a good book, I feel like not a single sentence could be left out. Every line means something. I didn't feel that here. There were plenty of absurd scenes along these lines, but in one of them, someone cuts off one of their own legs with a kitchen knife, crawls along for a while, and survives in the end. That's cheating the reader.
