The Power of Empathy in Fantasy

Ruled by the logic that life will remain stable in exchange for doing your part within all these norms and systems, the sensing body grows dull and desire becomes paralyzed.

The Overcoat | The Nose | Nikolai Gogol

How many people could ever experience waking up to find their nose gone, if not through fantasy? Reading about something that could never happen, I somehow felt a strangely familiar fear. It brought back the panic of missing public transportation you absolutely cannot miss, or realizing that something that was never supposed to disappear has vanished and you will never find it again. With this book, the laughter came first and the empathy followed later. We were all reading quietly at our book-exchange seminar, and I had to hold in my laughter because it was so funny. FROM THE BOOK Isn't it disgraceful for a major like me to go around without a nose? A woman selling peeled oranges on Voskresensky Bridge might very well sit there without one. As you can tell from the passage above, the protagonist is the kind of person who deserves to have his nose cut off. He is an unbelievable psycho creep obsessed with women, the human embodiment of bullying the weak and groveling before the strong. If I were his nose, I would run away too and never want to come back.

Not long ago, while talking with Patrick, it occurred to me that I might look like someone settling into a repetitive routine. FROM THE BOOK Ruled by the logic that life will remain stable in exchange for doing your part within all these norms and systems, the sensing body grows dull and desire becomes paralyzed. I read this while noticing how I was gradually accumulating more stuff living in Jeju, hearing that there would be a Harry Potter event, and thinking I would probably stay even longer because Jisoo and Sooyeon were coming to visit later than expected. This sentence has stayed with me more than any other sentence I've read in the past few years. I think I'll keep carrying it with me.

I had fun reading it because of how the story unfolded, picking up each bit of foreshadowing along the way. The story itself is interesting too. It was so short I was actually disappointed. Anyone could probably find at least a few faces among all these different ones that they can relate to. There is a lot of disgusting stuff created by disgusting people. But they are people you find everywhere. Looking back at my notes, apparently I wrote "Die" a lot 😭 lol. You can't live peacefully after doing wrong, and what goes around really does come around.

Sob... I really just don't understand poetry... Probably never will 😭 It made me think they must have had a good love... I read it thinking of Gaedori, and the words "a companion dog who never grows old or goes blind" really got me... 🥺 Gaedori did grow old in the end and went blind, and Yeoreum is going blind too, so I was reading the poem with Gaedori in mind—but then it turned out the dog wasn't actually the one being longed for, and that kind of broke the immersion. I don't have a person I long for, so it's hard for me to relate to it that way 😭

I read the editor's note first, and it sounded like it would have the vibe of a late-night ghost-story show, so I went in excited. Anything with a horror theme is good, haha. The writing was full of concrete, detailed descriptions that made the eerie atmosphere come to life on its own. The twist was fun, so I reread parts of it and enjoyed all the clues the author had planted.

Since it was a story told to a niece, it had a strong fairy-tale feel. Except it turned out to be a horror story with a twist. It felt like reading a classic version of Toy Story.

Strange News from Another Star | Augustus | Hermann Hesse

FROM THE BOOK What I wish for you is that no one will be able to help loving you. A meditation on being loved and loving. It's a novel that makes you wary of a wish you might easily make at least once. It was fun. You can see Hesse's view of how unconditional love can ruin a person. I do agree that you shouldn't raise children by indulging their every whim, but I couldn't relate to Hesse's cynical perspective. Everyone says this, but with the same confidence as, "If I won the lottery, I'd make really good use of it," I think the story would have unfolded differently if I had been Augustus. Of course, I understood what Hesse was trying to say, but maybe because I read this while I was in the middle of another one of his books, Reflections at Night, it rubbed me so completely the wrong way. Reflections at Night is narrated from such an intensely cynical perspective that, for the first time in my life, I truly understood what it meant to be someone's emotional trash can... what an incredible whiner. So I stopped reading. I still don't know if I'll continue.

Nibbling Away at Love | Ttibuttibu Random Slide | Kwon Hyeyoung

아니면 현실의 연장선으로 더 화가 났을까?(This is beside the point, but... wasn't it called Pputtipputti stickers...? 😭 I spent my whole life thinking it was Pputtipputti, but apparently everyone calls it Ttibuttibu. But if it isn't Pputtipputti, I can't bring myself to say it... 😭) Whenever I saw stories on the news about people who died by suicide because of their jobs, I understood the pain, but I was scientifically curious about the psychology of why they ended up choosing suicide instead of quitting. Later, I guessed that maybe the terrifying thing about depression is that it can make even quitting feel like too much. The "I" and Joo Yijeong in the story are young people living in the present day, so it offered a glimpse into contemporary youth culture. (I'm young too, but at some point I drifted away from the trends.) Naturally, I thought most of my Korean friends and peers who keep up with what's popular these days would have an easy time seeing themselves in the characters and getting immersed in the story. It did a good job of unpacking the pain people in their twenties and thirties carry today. Since it's fantasy, the premise makes no sense. But it uses that nonsensical premise to portray the terror of depression really well. The problem was me, the person reading it... I understood the point perfectly well, but I kept getting hung up on unimportant things that made no sense. (Solid foreshadowing and airtight details matter enormously to me in both movies and books, and that's where I find the fun.) There was a time when I didn't want to go to work either because of the gross old men there. What kind of review would I have written if I'd read this back then? Would I have felt comforted? Would I have envied "I" and Joo Yigyeong? Or would it have felt like an extension of reality and made me even angrier?

There were ten short, fun stories. Some of them made me want to read the full books.
